THE TRINITY
It wasn’t until shortly after dinner that a knock came at Tobias’ door. “You asked to see me?” Brice entered hesitantly and somewhat agitated. Yet, he appeared more subdued than his usual impatient demeanor.
“Et intrabit. Enter, Bricius. Where have you been?” Tobias asked, not looking up at the man, instead continuing to write on delicate parchment. He dipped his quill one last time into the dark ink to finalize the letter with his signature. He sanded the document, to set the ink, carefully blowing the sand off before rolling it up and sealing it with the Trinity’s impression, using warm sealing wax to ratify its authenticity.
“What’s this about?” Brice asked, nodding toward the scroll.
“Confidential business with his eminence, the Pope. I need you to deliver this to him, and you must guard it with your life. Elian and Rupert will escort you to Rome.” Tobias slid the letter into the Trinity’s silver scroll holder embossed with intricate foliate design, and locked it securely inside.
“Is this about the descendant? Does she continue to cause trouble?” Bricius barked from the chamber’s door.
Tobias silently instructed the man to close it behind him.
“She remains a thorn in the grand scheme of life, but not all of this is her fault,” Tobias responded, annoyed.
“You know where I stand on having any more to do with that girl. We’re better off without her humanity sullying our righteous responsibilities. By the way, where might one find her?”
“If one knew, she’d be securely locked away in our tower, unable to cause any more trouble. Might I remind you, you were human once, too?” Tobias spit out. “You bring the remnants of your humanity with you into your position with the Trinity. If I recall, you were not always as pious as you deign to be now. So, careful with your tone when addressing me, I have enough on my mind,”
“My apologies, Tobias. I forgot my place in the heat of the moment, especially at the mention of that girl.”
“I would recommend some meditation to better handle your temperament, and soon. You may go,” Tobias said, handing Bricius the sacred scroll and quickly dismissing him.
Bricius rushed across the grounds, aiming for the dormitories. He was tired of always being under scrutiny for his temper. He had been a hotheaded man, a man who believed in actions and not words. It was by his springing to action to stop a bank robbery and possible fatal assaults on innocent people, that he had lost his life, thus earning his position in the Trinity for his humanitarianism. Admittedly, there were times he wondered how he had been directed to the heavenly army. He had never been a bad person, but he was never a saint either, having moments of indiscretion within his past.
He slammed the door to his room, disturbing the elderly Brother Marcus, who sat praying on his side of the suite.
“Temper, my son,” Marcus reminded him.
“Silence yourself, old man! I have things on my mind,” Brice snapped as he examined the ornate casement which contained the letter addressed to the pope himself.
